This light-filled West Berkeley camel-back (split-level) 2-story addition and remodel accommodates a family of four and the grandmother with a new granny flat at the lower level. The entire rear of the house was removed while all work occurred within the existing home's compact footprint. Area was added through 'stacking' bedrooms. One climbs up half a flight to the parents' level or down half a flight to grandma's flat from the main floor.
The in-law unit, accessible from the rest of the house by a skylight-lit interior stair, shares the use of the remodeled family kitchen. The separate apartment
affords closeness yet privacy with its own bedroom, bathroom, den, and
entrance from the backyard.
The upstairs bedroom absorbed space left over after we relocated an existing laundry room. Now an office/master bedroom suite, it boasts a worktable for his and her laptops with a view of the yard and tree house. Like the granny flat, the master suite is on its own distinct level, separate from the kids' bedrooms and the main living area.
